5 STAGES
490KM

Tour Details
Our Tuscan Gravel Tour takes inspiration from events including the Tuscan Trail and Strade Bianche to give you a gravel adventure like no other. Let us take care of the logistics allowing you to focus entirely on enjoying the challenging route and stunning terrain. The Riva Cycling team will support you all the way, providing food stops, luggage transfer and mechanical backup. Set in Italy’s home of gravel, over 5 stages the white roads and rolling hills will take you to some of Italy’s most beautiful destinations. This is a trip for those looking for the ultimate gravel adventure but prefer the added comfort of hotel accommodation and not having to carry your own luggage.
The 7-day trip is split into 5 tour stages and an arrival and departure day, where there should be time for a short ride to check the bikes and explore the local area.
Stage distances vary between 80km and 125km with 40% -55% of each stage on unpaved tracks.
GPX routes will be provided and it is your responsibility to self-guide. Our support team will meet you at regular points each day to provide food, drinks, moral support and assistance with any mechanical issues. The vehicle support also functions as a back-up for anyone needing to cut a stage short due to mechanical issues, fatigue or for any other reason.
A route card is provided for each stage so you know where the support meet up points and lunch stops are. Depending on the group size we will have one or two vans accompanying the tour.

Wednesday 28 May
Arrival Day
You will be met at Pisa Airport (please speak to us about transfers from other airports) for the 50 minute transfer to the hotel. The tour starts near the coast at San Giusto where you will be staying on the first and last nights.
On arrival we will help you assemble bikes or setup hire bikes and head out for a short ride to test the bike and wake the legs! We will then provide a briefing for the week ahead and introduce you to the team.
Thursday 29 May
Stage 1: 113km
San Giusto to Grosseto
The first stage is the longest, but also the flattest. Heading initially inland before rejoining the beautiful coastline, with the views out towards the Tuscan Archipelago a real highlight. The final part of the stage crosses a flat plain to reach the historic town of Grosseto where you will spend the night.
Friday 30 May
Stage 2: 107km
Grosseto to Montepulciano
The first 20km will provide a gentle start to the day until reaching Montorsaio. From here on the route will climb and descend, with an equal split of tarmac and gravel sections. The quiet gravel roads, scattered hilltop villages and stunning landscapes are what this tour is all about and typify the Tuscan countryside.
The medieval town of Montepulciano is the destination and is packed with historical interest if you’re not too busy sampling the wine the area is famous for.
Saturday 31 May
Stage 3: 80km
Montepulciano to Siena
A shorter third stage will still provide plenty of challenges, with the highest percentage of unpaved roads on the tour so far. A mixture of shorter steeper climbs and longer hills will result in plenty of fatigue in the legs by the time you hit the iconic climb of Santa Caterina up to the Piazza del Campo in Siena, replicating the finish of Strade Bianche.
Sunday 1 June
Stage 4: 80km
Siena to Volterra
Stage 4 is similar on paper to the previous stage, again you will cover 80km and experience a similar amount of time on the white gravel roads. You will however notice a change in landscape as you head north-west. There are less short punchy climbs and longer more gradual gradients. The highest point reaches 600m and coming towards the end of the stage you’ll be pleased when the hilltop town of Volterra comes into view.
Monday 2 June
Stage 5: 103km
Volterra to San Giusto
A rolling first 60km will return you back to the coast for the final push home. Although a longer stage, the flat final 50km will see the distance countdown quickly as you follow the coastline back to San Giusto where the tour began.
A celebratory dip in the sea and glass of prosecco will conclude a memorable trip experiencing the best of this amazing region.
Tuesday 3 June
Departure Day
Based on the suggested flight times there should be opportunity for a final morning ride before packing bikes and leaving for the transfer back to the airport.
